McWane EHS Story
A Pursuit of Excellence in Environmental, Health and Safety Management
McWane, Inc. is committed to leading the way for American manufacturing in the 21st century. That commitment begins with respect for our environment and dedication to the safety of our employees, while adhering to the principle of continuous improvement. Over the last decade, we have spent more than $300 million ensuring that our operations are safe for our employees and the environment. As a result, we operate some of the most modern, efficient, and safe facilities in the industry. For example, we designed and implemented an Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Management System that has been recognized as state of the art for its success in integrating data needed to manage our EHS performance. We also have comprehensive safety and environmental training programs that ensure our employees know how to do their jobs safely and in compliance with all laws and regulations. We’ve always been proud that our ductile iron products safely deliver clean water across the world. Made from 100 percent recycled materials—and fully recyclable—ductile iron pipe is non-leaching. Properly installed, ductile iron pipe can last for more than a century, reducing energy consumption and costs during its long useful life. In addition to producing these environmentally beneficial products, we have developed ways to make our facilities more environmentally friendly as well. Senior Vice President Jeet Radia and McWane’s environmental team have spearheaded company-wide initiatives to examine our manufacturing processes and to look for ways to improve energy efficiency and otherwise reduce environmental impacts. We are also exploring ways to incorporate Green Building principles into future EHS capital improvements to further reduce our environmental footprint. In recognition of our environmental leadership, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection selected Atlantic States for the New Jersey Environmental Stewardship Initiative—a program that recognizes companies that have gone above and beyond New Jersey environmental compliance. Also, the Utah Department of Environmental Quality named Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe Company, in Provo, Utah, as the 2007 recipient of its Outstanding Achievement in Pollution Prevention Award. McWane Pipe in Birmingham, Alabama, received the Cahaba River Society’s 2008 Blue Green Award for innovative stormwater management design. As J. R. McWane admonished as far back as 1921, “A man’s regularity as a workman is to be attributed not only to the wages he receives but to the conditions under which he works ... . Reduction in the number of accidents represents economy, for nothing is more wasteful in industry than accidents.” Holding true to Mr. McWane’s philosophy, our outstanding safety team, under the leadership of Vice President Barb Wisniewski, has propelled our company to industry-leading safety performance. We all share the motto “Do It Safely, or Not At All!” Five of our facilities have achieved OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) status, and all of our locations strive to achieve this exceptional standard of safety performance. As a company we have significantly reduced our accident and injury rates. Despite this success, however, our goal remains zero accidents and we will continue to improve our operations until it is achieved. For additional information, click here. The tremendous strides that we have made in our EHS performance are a tribute to the perseverance and hard work of our employees. Human Resources Vice President Michelle Clemon and her team are dedicated to making every McWane facility an employer of choice for our workforce. At the founding of our company J. R. McWane astutely observed that morale “is the thing without which no battle is ever finally won.” With progressive management training, innovative employee training, communication and development programs, outstanding benefits, scholarship and skill training opportunities, and a positive culture, we focus on helping our employees improve their lives at work and at home, so that we improve our corporate performance—continuously.
