Clow Canada Helps with Clean-Up
Jul 24, 2008
The Atlantic Coastal Action Program (ACAP) Saint John, a local non-profit organization, organized a cleanup of four beaches in the Saint John region as part of the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup. Over 30 volunteers, three of which were from Clow Canada, braved the rainy weather to spend the morning on a beach cleaning up garbage.
Clow Canada employees Ken McGavney, Don Bastarache and Craig Silliphant set out that morning for the Red Head Beach located just five minutes from the Clow Canada facility. They were joined by Angie Beaulieu, a resident of the area, and Ian Reeves, the ACAP Coordinator assigned to the beach. Though the dreary weather seemed to have scared off other volunteers, it had no bearing on the high spirits. By the end of the two and a half hour clean-up the group had managed to cover almost 1 km of beach. They were a little tired, wet and really dirty, but their efforts resulted in the collection of 10 bags of garbage, 4 bags of cans and bottles, 2 old tires, almost 200 lbs. of scrap metal, and yes, 1 kitchen sink.
The day was a large success at all four beaches. Overall, more than one quarter metric ton (250 kg) of garbage and marine debris was removed from Saint John's beaches. The guys from Clow Canada were proud to be a part of it.
