Oct 2, 2008
The Birmingham Business Journal presented Ruffner Page with the Green Business Leader of the Year award today at the "2008 Going Green" event held at the Harbert Center. Other categories receiving awards were Green Educator of the Year, Green Advocate of the Year, Green Innovator of the Year, Green Building of the Year and Green Project of the Year.
There are many ways that McWane promotes green practices each and every day at all of our facilities. One example is that McWane recycled more than 600,000 tons of scrap iron during the past year. The process of using recycled material to make ductile iron pipe has been done at McWane since the
1950s.
Another example is at McWane Pipe where several employees designed and installed a new state-of-the-art paint machine and process line designed to paint 3" thru 8" diameter pipe from 16 feet up to 20 feet long, using water based paint. This new machine completely eliminated the use of solvent based paint and reduces enviromental hazards and also eliminated the use of all hydraulic actuated equipment which creates a safer, more comfortable work environment.
McWane Pipe also installed a new storm water and industrial process water treatment and reuse system. The use of recycled water lessens the consumption of makeup water which must be brought in from outside sources such as the city water supply. McWane's Manchester Tank Crossville facility purchased resistance welding equipment to replace gas metal arc welding equipment for welding the collar welds and footring welds on cylinders. This eliminated welding fumes generated for welding collars and footrings and also eliminated the use of Argon.
These are just a few examples of what we are doing at McWane to improve the environment. We are very honored to receive this award.
