March 19, 2010 (Birmingham, AL) — More than 30 delegates from the China Foundry Association
(CFA) will tour two of McWane, Inc.’s iron foundries to study firsthand McWane’s industry leading environmental practices, programs and controls. The tours, slated for March 23 at McWane’s M&H Valve and Union Foundry facilities in Anniston, Alabama, are a result of a cooperative effort between the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Air and Radiation, the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP), and McWane Inc. to assist the MEP in developing regulations and strategies for improving environmental standards for foundries in China.

EPA asked McWane to participate in the initiative because of McWane’s successful implementation of state-of-the-art environmental controls and environmental management systems in all its foundries worldwide, including its facility in China.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to help China identify ways to further protect its environment,” said G. Ruffner Page, president of McWane, Inc. “We are also very proud to be recognized as an example of how foundries can be operated in an environmentally friendly manner, both for their communities and their employees.”

In September 2009, Page and Jeet Radia, McWane’s senior vice president for environment, safety and HR, traveled to Beijing to meet with senior EPA and MEP officials to launch the cooperative effort. One reason the EPA selected McWane was McWane’s successful construction in 2005 of an iron foundry in China’s Heibei Province featuring modern and effective environmental controls and systems consistent with US standards. McWane has also offered the MEP use of its China foundry as a training ground for regulators and enforcement inspectors on how a foundry should be designed and operated.

“We are looking forward to hosting the CFA delegates and providing them with a firsthand look at our world-class production processes and industry-leading environmental, health and safety controls, systems and programs”, said Page. “We look forward to helping them achieve the same levels of performance in their own foundries.”
